And the winner is... the Kumara!

The Centre for Science in the Public Interest, (CSPI), has ranked the Kumara as the most nutritionally rich vegetable in the world. The Kumara (baked) scored 184, over 100 points higher than the runner up, (the baked potato), which scored 83 points, followed by spinach at 73 points.

Points were awarded according to content of dietary fibre, naturally occurring sugars and complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron and calcium. Points were deducted for fat content (especially saturated fat), sodium, cholesterol, added refined sugars and caffeine.

They stated:

"Sweet potatoes contain almost twice the recommended daily intake of Vitamin A, 42% of ones Vitamin C, four times the RDA for beta carotene, and, when eaten with the skin, sweet potatoes have more fiber than oatmeal. All of these nutritional benefits with only about 130 to 160 calories".

It is easy to see why Kumara is so nutritious and good for you.
